The fact is that top Hamas leaders and spokespeople - including those from what is euphemistically called the Hamas "political wing" were quick and emphatic in the Hamas rejection of the Egyptian proposal:
- Former Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh went on TV last night and rejected the ceasefire. He went so far as to say that Israel's eagerness for a lull was proof that the "Zionists" were losing war. According to CNN, Haniyeh remains Hamas's "chief political leader".
- Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhum rejected the Egyptian proposal to AFP:
"A ceasefire without reaching an agreement is rejected. In times of war, you don't cease fire and then negotiate."
Barhum is one of a few spokesmen who actually speak for the entire organization.
- Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri rejected the ceasefire to the LA Times:
"We were not part of the announcement so we are not going to commit to it."
Abu Zuhri made similar statements to a number of outlets. Zuhri is a Hamas spokesman who speaks for the Hamas leadership.
Again, it is time for Hamas to be held responsible for its actions.
